Happily, this glimpse into the rigours of medieval life can be viewed from the comforts of a very welcoming bar in the former guard house.

No ancient stronghold would be complete without a well, and Neidpath's was cleverly protected. It's another extraordinary and original feature, for you to discover within the vaulted cellars.

The castle can seat up to 90 guests inside, for both the ceremony and wedding breakfast and up to 200 with a marquee in the courtyard. Alternatively, small but perfectly formed weddings for 2-20 people are just as charming in the vaulted rooms, with Queen Mary's Chamber to retire to for the night.

As well as the luxurious honeymoon chamber within the castle, there is accommodation for a further 16 people in the grounds and nearby at Barns.
