All self-respecting castles have a story and Blencowe’s no exception. When Cromwell’s men attempted to storm Greystoke, they stumbled on Blencowe instead. Cannon fire split the North Tower in two but their idiocy is your gain. The dramatic V-shaped chasm, now shored with glass, is an award-winning architectural feature of the multi-million pound restorations, allowing light and modernity to flood inside.

No competing activities or other wedding parties. We limit the number of weddings held in a year at Blencowe Hall so you’re guaranteed individual attention.

Your first glimpse of Blencowe, along the winding lane that leads from Greystoke village, is its two fortified towers of rosy sandstone rising over the hedgerows. As you sweep up the drive the view expands to buttressed walls and the arched entrance to an inner cobbled courtyard. Your wedding guests will be awestruck and you will be too.



Once inside, you’ll find flagstone and oak floors, vast hearths of blazing log fires, high ceilings hung with chandeliers and a lavish claret dining hall, lit by candle sconces. The first floor Solar Room, reached by a stone spiral staircase, spans an entire wing of the castle and is licensed for the ceremony itself.

Our generous terrace is ideal for hosting pre-dinner drinks before an antique dinner gong summons guests to a banquet by glittering candlelight in the claret dining hall overlooking the gardens and Cumbrian bluffs beyond.

The castle kitchens are made for banquets, whilst the pretty butler’s pantry is an ideal space to lay out a buffet or prepare for serving between courses so the wedding breakfast runs smoothly. We have several catering options from trusted providers whom we have handpicked and know well for their excellent standards and creativity. We can recommend all of them wholeheartedly and they would be happy to work with you on your menus. For large scale catering, your caterers can set up in the grounds if needed. Unlike some of the bigger hotels and venues, we do not build in any sort of mark-up on catering or wine corkage.

Spill out into the private castle gardens for stunning photographs overlooking the Eden Valley and rolling Lake District fells beyond. With terraces, lawns, a bubbling rill, an old moat and a haha, idyllic nooks abound for your guests to explore.

For parties over 45, as there is not enough space to accommodate all of the guests in the Hall for dining, we request our guests bring in a marquee, tipi or similar plus associated facilities on to our marquee field to ensure you have enough room for your group for dining and dancing in the evening. We charge a marquee facilitation fee if a marquee or similar is erected on our grounds.

And when the celebrations end, guests you can’t squeeze into the castle can just stroll across to the lovely coach house and barn conversions in the Estate gardens for a perfect night's sleep.
